inSonic2015
inSonic2015 aims to create a platform for bringing together composers, researchers, artists as well as teachers and students who are interested in spatial audio, sound art and multichannel approaches in media.
The main focus of inSonic2015 is a critical reflection on aesthetic concepts of spatial audio in sound, music and sound-art.
inSonic2015 is hosted by ZKM and HfG and is part of Globale 2015.
There will be two conference and symposium days combined with concerts and installations.
The main event is enhanced by a program of workshops, demonstrations and tutorials taking place in the preceding days.
inSonic2015 is organized in the framework of the BWS plus-Project „Studynetwork Space-Media-Sound“.
BWS plus is part of the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM for university students, a program of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung.
Call for Participation
inSonic-2015 calls for academic and non academic works and contributions, which will be reviewed by panels.
We invite submission in the following categories:
- Papers and Posters

- Workshops and Tutorials/Demonstrations
Call for Papers and Posters
Written contributions should focus on aesthetic and musical aspects of:
- sounding objects in space
- motion and gesture in space
- application of novel spatialsation techniques for composition, music and improvisation
- interaction and control of sound and media in space
- benefits of spatial audio for electronic and acoustic sound and music
- developments in space simulating techniques such as wave field synthesis (WFS), high order ambisonics (HOA) and combined systems
- non conventional speakers setups and diffusion techniques
Excellent papers will be selected for subsequent publication in a peer-reviewed journal. These papers will be expanded versions of the presented works, and will go through the journal's standard peer review process.
Templates for paper and poster proposals wil be available on the submission site.
Call for Compositions and Performances
Music contributions should have a focus on:
- multichannel compositions
- spatialisation techniques for spherical speaker setup (Klangdome ~43 speakers)
- music for a linear wave field synthesis system (128 speakers)
- music for a fixed installation setup (The Morning Line)
- mixed media works with audio requirements according to the above systems
Selected works will be invited for aural presentation or round table discussion, please indicate during submission your interest in aural presentation of your work.

Graphic 1: © by J. Goßmann (ZKM)
Equipped with 47 Meyersound loudspeakers arranged in a hemispheric setup ZKM_Klangdom is the ideal space for concerts of spatial music. With this unique speaker instrument complex polyphonic surround sound movements can be performed realistically and perceived from every place in the concert room. This plasticity of sound in space can be controlled by the specially developed control software Zirkonium.
IRCAM WFS-System

Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) is a sound reproduction technique that goes well beyond the limits of conventional systems in terms of reproduction fidelity in a wide listening zone. WFS aims at reproducing or synthesizing the true physical attributes of a sound field over an extended area of the listening room.
For inSonic2015 a WFS array of 128 Amadeus PMX-5 ES loudspeakers from IRCAM Paris will be installed in Karlsruhe.
The Morning Line

The Morning Line is a large outdoor sculpture conceived by Matthew Ritchie and commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation (TBA-21). This Sound Pavillion shaped in an open fractal based structure is equipped with 46 loudspeakers and 12 subwoofers. The central control unit of The Morning Line is driven by a special software designed by Tony Myatt. InSonic2015 will feature a selection of compositions interacting with this unique environment for spatial audio.
HfG Lichthöfe (atriums)

HfG Lichthöfe (atriums) at the center of the University of Media Arts and Design offer a large space for installations and concerts in the course of inSonic2015. With the possibility of installing custom type or even totally unusual speaker setups this place provides numerous oppurtunities for the exploration of the aesthetic potential of sound in space.
